Rootnine (“we”) respects the privacy of everyone who uses the camera app Whenere (“the app”). This policy explains what the app sends, why, and where.
This document is separate from the Privacy Policy that applies to the other services rootnine operates. This document is the one that applies to Whenere.
1. At a glance
- No sign-up. We never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- Your photos never leave your device. Stamping the date and place happens entirely on your phone.
- Location is used only to look up the place name. Only the coordinates (latitude, longitude) are sent to a map service.
- Ads are served by Google AdMob. If you don’t allow tracking, you only see non-personalized ads.
- Error reports are sent only to fix crashes. Photos, coordinates and file paths are removed first.
- We run no servers. We do not collect or keep your information on servers of our own.
2. What we process and why
| Data | When | Why | Sent to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photos | When you shoot or stamp a gallery photo | Create a new stamped photo in your album | Not sent (on-device only) |
| Location (coordinates) | While using the camera, if allowed | Stamp the neighborhood name | Inside Korea with the app in Korean: Kakao Local API · otherwise: the phone’s built-in geocoder (Apple / Google) |
| Advertising ID, device info | When showing ads | Serve and measure ads | Google AdMob |
| Error data (error message, device model, OS version, app version) | When the app hits an error | Find and fix bugs | Sentry |
The app stores the following on your device only; it is deleted when you delete the app:
- Rounded coordinates and place names (so the same place isn’t looked up again; up to 180 days)
- Names and coordinates of favorite places you save
- Stamping history and settings
Each new photo carries the same capture date and location data (EXIF) as the original, so that it sits next to the original in your gallery. If you send the photo to someone, this data may go with it.
3. Retention and deletion
We do not store your information on any server of ours. What the app keeps on your device, and what it sends to other companies, is kept and deleted as follows.
| Data | Retention | How it is deleted |
|---|---|---|
| Rounded coordinates and place names (on device) | Up to 180 days | No longer used once expired, and removed from the on-device database when the app starts |
| Favorite places (on device) | Until you delete them or delete the app | Deleted immediately when you remove them in the app’s Places screen |
| Stamping history and settings (on device) | Until you delete the app | Deleted by the operating system together with the app’s data |
| Data sent to other companies (Section 4) | For the period set in each recipient’s policy | Destroyed by the recipient under its own policy |
4. Who receives data (processing and overseas transfer)
| Recipient | Purpose | Country | Data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kakao Corp. | Coordinates → place name | Korea | Coordinates |
| Apple Inc. / Google LLC | Coordinates → place name (built-in) | USA | Coordinates |
| Google LLC (AdMob) | Ads | USA | Advertising ID (if allowed), device info, IP address |
| Functional Software, Inc. (Sentry) | Error reports | USA | Error data |
Each company handles the data it receives under its own privacy policy. We do not provide your information to anyone other than the recipients listed above.
Overseas transfer
Data sent to the companies in the United States (Apple, Google, Sentry) is transferred as follows.
- When — the same as “When” in the Section 2 table: each time the app looks up a place name (if location is allowed), shows an ad, or hits an error.
- How — the app sends it over the internet through the phone’s built-in features or each company’s toolkit (SDK).
- Retention — kept for the period set in the recipient’s own policy.
- How to refuse, and what happens — turn off location and no coordinates are sent; only the date is stamped. Don’t allow tracking and no advertising ID is sent; you see only non-personalized ads. The device info needed for ads and the error data cannot be switched off separately in the app.
- Recipients’ privacy policies and contacts — Apple · Google · Sentry · Kakao
5. Your choices
- Turn off location and only the date is stamped. Change it anytime in Settings → Whenere → Location.
- Don’t allow tracking and you only see non-personalized ads (iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking). On Android, go to Settings → Google → Ads to delete the advertising ID or opt out of ads personalization.
- In the EEA/UK and similar regions, change your ad consent in the app’s Settings → Ad privacy settings.
- Camera and photo access can be turned off anytime in your phone’s settings.
6. Your rights and how to exercise them
You may at any time ask to access, correct, delete, or stop the processing of your personal data.
Because there is no sign-up and we do not collect your information on servers, we hold nothing on our side that would let us identify you and show or correct your data. What the app keeps on your device is in your hands.
- Access, correction, deletion — view, edit, and delete favorite places in the app’s Places screen. Deleting the app removes everything it stored on your device.
- Stopping processing — turn off location, camera, or photo access in your phone’s settings, or don’t allow tracking, and processing of that data stops (Section 5).
- For data sent to other companies, you can make requests under each company’s policy (Section 4).
For any other request or question, write to the contact below and we will reply without delay.
7. Security measures
- We run no servers, and photos are processed only on your device.
- Location is received only while you use the app. The app does not request background location access.
- When looking up a place name, coordinates are sent only to five decimal places (about 1 m), and the connection to Kakao is encrypted (HTTPS).
- Error reports do not include personal identifiers by default, and photos, coordinates and file paths are removed before they are sent.
8. Children
The app does not separately collect information from children under 14. With no sign-up, it never asks for your age, name or contact details.
